Leave the city of Rome by train (for example, take the 09.00 am train from Termini to Castelgandolfo - it's a panoramic 40 minute's ride), avoid traffic and escape to another World. A magical world of Diana / Artemis, nature-based spirituality and green witches; a place that predates Rome itself. Nemi is the home of the Temple of Diana Nemorensis, on the gorgeously picturesque and mystical lake in the crater of a volcano, known as Diana's Mirror (Which inspired Frazer's the "Golden Bough").

In the summer tourists visit the town for the pretty views, Nemi's famous wild strawberries and characteristic charm, completely ignoring the mystical side of Nemi!
Nemi was a sacred place for the Romans and Caligula even built 2 temple-ships on the lake. Every August people would walk all the way from Rome in procession to worship Diana (the Roman counterpart of Artemis) and leave votives, in the hope of curing ailments, to ask for easy childbirth or fertility. It emanates a feeling of calm and is still surrounded by thick woodlands. Really a place not to be missed on your itinerary if you are in Rome.
Explore Nemi with your unique local resident who will tell you all about lesser-known parts of its history, including stories of "Mad Emperor" Caligula.
What should you bring? Wear comfy shoes, bug spray, maybe a hat..anything that will make you comfortable on a warm day.
